Course Description

This course is designed for law enforcement, fire, EMS, mental health professionals and other public safety personnel who may encounter Veterans and military personnel in their communities. This course will discuss Veteran specific mental health issues, risk factors for Veteran suicide, protective factors, and intervention strategies as well as resources available to assist first responders with Veterans in crisis.

Takeaways

Students in this course will learn the signs and symptoms of Veteran PTSD, an in-depth understanding of the risk factors of suicide by military service members and Veterans, in depth understanding of other mental health issues facing military and Veterans such as Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Military Sexual Trauma (MST), a deeper understanding of protective Factors for suicide prevention and resources available to assist first responders with Veterans in crisis. This course also includes scenario-based training to give students the opportunity for practical application of concepts learned in the course.
