These courses may be certified by the California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training (CA POST), or receive professional credit through the Arizona Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training (AZ POST). In addition, mental health professionals can receive Continuing Education Units (CEU’s) for our training classes.

Veteran & Military: Specialized Populations – Advanced Course

This course is designed for law enforcement who encounter Veterans and military personnel exhibiting threatening or hostile behavior in their communities. This course will discuss assessing threats involving military/Veterans, historical incidents involving military personnel, military training/skills, gang/HVE concerns overview, case studies and tactical communication strategies.

Understanding the Veteran Experience for Managers & Supervisors

This course is designed for public and private sector personnel who may encounter Veterans and military personnel in their workforce. This course will discuss:

  • Understanding of Military and Veteran culture that Veterans bring to the Civilian Workforce
  • Comparison of Military and Civilian Employer Values
  • New Employee Engagement Strategies
  • Military and Veteran Statistics
  • VEVRAA and USERRA Laws

Veteran Culture for First Responders (CA and AZ POST Credit)

This course was designed for law enforcement, fire, EMS, mental health and other public safety personnel who may encounter Veterans and military personnel in crisis in their communities.

Learning Outcomes:

When responding to incidents involving Veterans and military personnel, public safety personnel will be able to appropriately identify Veteran and Military members, recognize signs and symptoms of Veterans with mental health issues, identify Veterans in crisis, use learned officer safety skills to help stabilize and secure the scene, employ de-escalation techniques when applicable and know of appropriate resources to further assist Veterans. This course also includes scenario-based training to give students the opportunity for practical application of concepts learned in the course.

Veteran Mental Health Identification for First Responders (CA and AZ POST Credit)

This course is designed for law enforcement, fire, EMS, mental health professionals and other public safety personnel who may encounter Veterans and military personnel in their communities. This course will discuss Veteran specific mental health issues, risk factors for Veteran suicide, protective factors, and intervention strategies as well as resources available to assist first responders with Veterans in crisis.

Learning Outcomes:

Students in this course will learn the signs and symptoms of Veteran PTSD, an in-depth understanding of the risk factors of suicide by military service members and Veterans, in depth understanding of other mental health issues facing military and Veterans such as Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Military Sexual Trauma (MST), a deeper understanding of protective Factors for suicide prevention and resources available to assist first responders with Veterans in crisis. This course also includes scenario-based training to give students the opportunity for practical application of concepts learned in the course.

Risk Management for Veteran Peer Access Network Personnel (CEU’s Available)

This course is designed for Veteran Peer Support Specialists who will be helping Veterans and military personnel out in their communities. This course will discuss risk assessment processes, risk mitigation steps, de-escalation of volatile behavior, personal safety, reporting of crimes and criminal activity, rapport building and tactical communication strategies. Introduction of Military Sexual Trauma and how that impacts military and Veteran personnel and resources available to assist VPAN Specialists with Veterans in crisis.

Learning Outcomes:

The student will be able to define Risk Assessment, understand and employ risk assessment processes, employ risk mitigation steps, engage in rapport building, communication and de-escalation techniques. Students will also learn about resources available to assist VPAN Specialists, introduction to Military Sexual Trauma, Crime Reporting and Critical Incident Response. This course also includes scenario-based training to give students the opportunity for practical application of concepts learned in the course.
