Understanding the Veteran Experience – LAC MVA at Tue, Apr 14, 2026 09:00 PDT

Course Description

Los Angeles County serves one of the largest veteran populations in the nation. Among them are veterans who intersect with our justice, health, housing, and social service systems. Justice-involved veterans are not defined solely by their system involvement. They are shaped by military culture, operational stress, transition challenges, and service-connected conditions that influence communication, behavior, and response to authority. This Veteran Cultural Competency course provides LA County employees and community partners with a foundational understanding of: • Military structure, values, and identity • The impact of deployment and reintegration • PTSD, traumatic brain injury, moral injury, and substance use • How military conditioning influences engagement and decision-making • How informed awareness improves outcomes across systems
